The Garden is IN!!!

And the Angels rejoice and soooo do I!

Finally, after one set back after another, we now have a garden.
I'm sorry I haven't posted pictures and updates sooner, but I have been working my butt off trying to get not only the garden done, but get my house painted as well.

We finally did the last tilling of the garden last weekend and I have spent the week planting and transplanting from a nursery bed that I started most of the plants in.

We successfully transplanted all of those yesterday and today, and we also got the watermelons and beans in the ground too!

While we were waiting for the ground to dry out enough to till last week, we installed a gate around the garden to keep kid, kritters, and karacters out.
My daughter painted a sign expressing our wishes, and it seems to rather effective. As foot traffic has decreased substantially.

Donna, I hope we did everything right. I can't wait to eat some beans! We planted the limas and both types of green beans and the kidneys.

Tomorrow, or Tuesday I am hoping that my baby Bell Pepper plants are big enough to go out into the big garden so I can have the pepper bed filled.

Thanks to all who have participated in tilling, hoeing, listening, and advising. I couldn't have done it with out you!

Let's pray for a healthy garden this summer, and a wonderful bounty to can for the winter.

Steph, don't feel bad about getting your garden in late, it will be fine. If it makes you feel better, I just planted corn today, YIKES. I am way behind. Now I'm just waiting for my spring plot to be emptied out so I can prepare it for fall planting in July. Everything seems to be coming along. I learned a good lesson this year about bush peas. After all of these years I will not be planting them without support ever again. In fact, I am thinking about switching over to pole climbing peas for my fall planting.

I have found a good use for all of those discarded campaign signs. I use the signs to stamp out a walking path between rows and beds. The frames I am going to use as short trellises for my wax beans. I'll take pics when I get them in the ground and strung.

What a great IDEA!

Thanks for all of your encouragement!

Steph if you knew me like some do, you would find that I am THE recycler. I can't throw anything away because I can always find a use for it other than it's intended use. LOL I am a pack rat and junk collector from way back. EVERYTHING has a use, we just have to have the need for something to find it's use. :)

OH, If you try this trellis idea or any trellis for that matter... I plant on both sides of the trellis, staggering the beans. Get twice as much crop out of the same space. :) We have a 24 x 8 foot trellis for our Kentucky Wonder string beans, planting both sides actually gives us 48 foot of row and more beans than I ever expected last year.

Should I plant any of the beans that you sent me on the fence or trellis?

I just planted them the other day and was going to stake them when they came up. I have lots of stakes.

Hubby stakes of lots when he sells them at auction.

Gosh Steph, I'm sorry for not checking back sooner. The kentucky wonder green beans are pole beans, they need a tall trellis or poles to climb. The limas and kidney beans are bush beans but I still trellis them on short trellises. If the pods aren't laying on the ground they are less likely to rot. I don't like the way they supposedly support themselves, they flop over on each other, it's just messy and harder to pick the beans. It's a personal preference. That's why the campaign sign frames make great trellises.

Donna,
Everything is growing beautifully!
Thank you so very much for the wonderful seeds.

I have a question...The spinach I planted in the early spring only had a couple that came up and while I broke off a few leaves and added them to a salad there just wasnt much. Now they are going to seed and I would like to collect them.

How? When? and What do I do to them to ensure they will sprout? Also, how long before I can plant them?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Donna,

My spinach is going to seed...when do I collect them? When they are still in the pod or wait until they burst and are black?

I hope you got your seed from the spinach. I wait until they burst and are dark in color.

I'm sorry I haven't checked back sooner. My garden is keeping me so busy this year, it's the best it has been in years. I am thankful for all the rain, it certainly makes a difference.

I just cleared my spring/fall plot out and am getting ready to replant with fall veggies. The summer plot keeps producing as quick as I can harvest, for this I am also thankful.

As predicted, I've got so many jalapeno peppers I don't know what to do with all of them. I can only make so much salsa. LOL

Hope all is well.
