I Know I Know, It's only 25 Degrees Outside, But....
I'm already getting Spring Fever!
I found some garlic in the fridge the other day that had started to sprout, and I want to plant it.
I am already starting to take inventory of my seeds and I am looking for the most logical place to put grow lights to get my peppers, and tomatoes started not to mention my broccoli, cabbage, leeks, spinach, Brussels sprouts and onions.
I am going to have 3 plots this year.
My kitchen garden for my | Direct Links | Movies world | Software world | Download PC Games | Mediafire Links | Celebrity Picturesherbs and a few tomatoes and peppers, onions and garlic.
Then a cool garden for my spinach, cabbage, lettuces and tender things.
The Big One. This will be my big patch, for my beans, taters, melons, cukes, squash, corn and pumpkins.
I will go over and visit Himself this weekend and make an appointment with his tiller for a first run through the dirt. This activity always serves to motivate me to get even more things in the garden accomplished.
Oh, I can't wait for the dirt to get crammed under my fingernails!

Steph;
To get fully delevoped garlic or onions, they should be planted early in the fall so they can grow over the winter. During really cold weather, they stop growing, but will continue to develop when the temperatures moderate.
Steph,
I've been thinking about you the past few days while I've been starting my seeds. I don't use grow lights, I rely on the sun, fortunately we have a room with a south/southwesterly view that is full of light daily and the heat vent being under the window makes a great place to start seeds. I have been counting down the days until spring (52) from now. I'm curious about your brussel sprouts. I have sworn off of spring planting them because they never seem to fare well. I get plenty of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage but not brussel sprouts. Are yours forming up well before the heat of summer sets in? If so, how are you doing it? I'll start my seeds in July for fall planting and hopefully we'll get a good fall crop this year.
We're spreading manure this weekend the snow should help it leech in pretty good. Also going to start our asparagus bed so we can get the crowns set early in March.
Hi Donna,
I purchased Brussel Sprout plants last year from Thomas Gardens in New church.
Yes they formed up in the heat but I had so many cabbage worms, very few got eaten.
It is really hard to smoosh the worms on those tiny little cabbage heads.
I ended up using sevin dust and I felt absolutely auful about it.
So I am going to plant them as a fall crop.
I have don't have any good place to start my seeds, and usually end up buying many of my plants from Thomas's or from friends, unless I can directly sow them into the soil.
I have a cold frame at my Graddads that he accidently broke last year so I'm really stuck this year.
Do you sow your Brussels directly into the soil in July or have you started them inside?
Many years ago I was told a by a high wicken priestess that seeds should be started on ground hogs day. I've been doing that ever since, save this year, when I was tapping maple trees, but we'll see how that adventure pans out.
I find a spring planting of brussel sprouts attracts all sorts of unwanted pests. I refuse to put anything on my plants and sometimes that means a little extra protein with my veggies. I don't know about you, but I can taste the sevin dust even if it's been weeks since its application.
I'm so excited I'm finally getting a compost tumbler this year. I broke down and spent the money. It was either buy the tumbler or pay a chiropractor. I'd rather be dipped in spit than go to a doctor. :) At least I'll get something for my one time expense. I'll have plenty of compost tea available if you want some.
I don't use sevin or anything chemical. To keep the little buggies off my veggies and roses I use Neem oil. I put 3 tablespoons of neem oil in some liquid ivory soap to emulsify then pour that in a gallon milk jug, use a quart spray bottle when I need to use it. It really helped my parsley last year, those big ugly green horn worms were kept at bay. Cabbage flies don't care for it to much either.
I'm planting my garlic in with my roses this season hoping to keep the japanese beetles away. We'll see how that goes.
Oh, I am going to direct sow the brussel sprout seeds this July and see if I have any better luck with a fall crop.
What seeds are you looking for? I might have some on hand to share.
Congratulations! You will be the envy of the gardening neighborhood.
Those tumblers are great!
I am interested in any seeds that are open pollinated not hybrid seeds.
Let me know what you got!
I've got some seed here I'd be willing to share.
Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, roma tomatos, turnips, carrots, sugar baby watermelons, pumpkins (smaller pie type not jack o lanterns), green beans (bush), sugar snap peas, green peas, lima beans and kidney beans.
I don't have a ton but I will share some, enough to get you some plants started and a few good rows of beans and peas. Just let me know.
Donna,
I would love any of those seeds!
I am going to dilegently save seeds this year.
I have even been saving little bottles for them.
Shall I come to you or would you like to come here?
Just let me know and you can just email me with contact info at wymzie@wymzie.com
Thanks!
Steph, I just sent you an email. Sorry, I haven't been checking the blogs lately.
